In this famous experiment, a solid aluminum ring places over a coil of wire wound on an iron core is shot many feet into the air by eddy current repulsion when the coil is energized with an alternating current. However, when the solid aluminum ring is replaced by a slit aluminum ring or an acrylic ring, there is no effect. This new version of the apparatus eliminates the uncertainties and hazards often associated with the experiment. An automatic, one-shot timing feature prevents the coil from overheating and eliminates repetitive shots. In addition, all the current carrying components are insulated to prevent accidental contact. Operation could not be easier – just plug the apparatus into a wall socket, place the solid ring over the coil, and press the button. This ring immediately shoots up to 4m (12 feet) into the air! To illustrate the induced current, a small coil of insulated wire connected to a lamp is placed over the main coil, and when the button is pressed the lamp lights briefly.
